In 3 from Hell, Spaulding is revealed to have just barely survived the shootout alongside Otis and Baby, and the trio are put on trial and imprisoned not long after their recovery. Spaulding, Baby, and Otis escape by car, and are shot by authorities while speeding towards a police barricade. Wydell tortures them and sets the house on fire, leaving Spaulding and Otis to die, but they are rescued by Tiny Firefly. Later in the film, Spaulding is captured with Baby Firefly and Otis Driftwood by Sheriff John Wydell and brought to the Firefly house. At the beginning of the film, the Firefly house is subjected to a search and destroy mission by state troopers, but Spaulding is elsewhere during the raid. In The Devil's Rejects, Spaulding is established as the patriarch of the Firefly family, and the father of Baby Firefly. Spaulding's connection to the Firefly clan is kept ambiguous throughout most of the film. Satan, Spaulding directs them in the path of the murderous Firefly family. In this first film, when a group of four people visit Spaulding's establishment and learn of the local legend of Dr. In House of 1000 Corpses, Spaulding is introduced as a vulgar clown, and the proprietor of a gas station in Texas that sells fried chicken and also serves as a roadside haunted house attraction.

Despite the mixture of material, this CD contains some rare performances that Marx Brothers fans will welcome.Captain Spaulding, played by Sid Haig, just as several other characters from the series are named after characters from Marx Brothers films, is named for Groucho Marx's character from the musical Animal Crackers and the film of the same name. As a singer re-creating some of his favorites from the Marx Brothers films, such as the title song and "Lydia the Tattooed Lady" (which features Crosby's backup-singer contribution), Groucho is as funny as when he is only talking his way through the radio skits, which he sends up even as he reads them. Of course, Groucho dominates the proceedings, as he is featured on ten tracks, with Chico and Harpo only appearing on two each. Guest stars sitting in with the Marx Brothers include Lucille Ball, Bing Crosby, Dinah Shore, and Johnny Weissmuller. The airchecks are much longer than the studio tracks, three of them clocking in at over ten minutes each. Groucho Marx With The Ken Lane Singers Hooray For Captain Spaulding: 2: Groucho Marx With The Ken Lane Singers Show Me A Rose: 3: Groucho Marx With The Ken Lane Singers Go West, Young Man 4: Groucho Marx With The Ken Lane Singers Dr. The airchecks, by contrast, often contain considerable surface noise, particularly the one '30s selection (and the only one to feature two of the brothers), "Hollywood Agents," a skit featuring Groucho and Chico Marx. The Groucho and Harpo studio tracks, in excellent sound quality, have a distinctly '50s pop feel to them, with sweet string arrangements and, in the case of Groucho's songs, the prominent presence of the Ken Lane Singers. The initial impulse of the brothers’ manic energy and inventive wordplay was difficult to reproduce as time wore on, although they did make seven first-rate Marx Brothers movies before tailing off (the last really good one being A Day at the Races from 1937).

Also included are two no-laughs musical performances by Harpo Marx, "Stardust" and "Tea for Two," and five airchecks of appearances by one or two of the Marx Brothers from the 1930s and '40s. Rule of thumb, the earlier a Marx Brothers movie was made, the better it probably is. The impetus behind the release of this 2005 unlicensed collection of Marx Brothers recordings seems to be that Groucho Marx's 1954 album, also called Hooray for Captain Spaulding (Decca Records DL 5405), fell out of copyright in Europe the first six selections on the disc come from that 10" LP.
